I read an article recently that suggested a decent storm could contain up to 1.3 billion volts! Even if it were only millions, that’s still a lot of power. And yet God can hang out in storms! In Job 38:1-3 God speaks to Job “Out of a Storm”. Now Job’s life had descended into one giant storm of suffering and grief (perhaps not 1.3 billion volts worth, but bad enough). And now Job is confronted by Almighty God from out of a storm. It must have put things in perspective in some ways – but it does say to us, no matter the storms of suffering that invade our lives, our God, master of the storm has more than enough power to rescue and renew us.
We have a totally awesome God who can speak to us out of a storm! He can bring to us all that we need for restoration, healing and new life.
It’s a challenge for us to get our heads around just how powerful God really is. As disciples of Jesus, we know God as a person like us, someone who suffered for us, someone who died. But yet we also know him as Lord and we know that one day we will gather at his heavenly throne and his full glory will be revealed to us.
So our worship of God is really an extraordinary event that brings us right into his presence, right to the cross and all it’s power. All the more so as he invites us to the table and feeds us with his own body and blood: the bread of life and the redeeming cleansing flow.
