Have you ever been to a country where you didn’t speak the local language? If you have, you might have felt out of place, uncomfortable, or isolated. When we struggle to communicate with the people around us it’s hard to feel welcome or safe.
This Sunday is Pentecost, the day that we celebrate the disciples receiving the Holy Spirit and began proclaiming the wonderous deeds of God in many languages!
Try putting yourself in the position of the people who heard that proclamation. Imagine a Jew, born and raised in Egypt, Arabia, or perhaps Libya, who had come to Jerusalem for the festival of Pentecost. They could speak some Greek, but it was always hard to understand the people around them. Suddenly, they hear a big ruckus, a crowd is starting to gather, and as they start to follow the crowd, what do they hear?
A loud voice proclaiming the wonderous deeds of God—in the language of their home.
Just imagine that incredible feeling of connection and unity, perfectly fit for the message of Jesus and all that He has done for His people. The coming of the Holy Spirit brings the unity of God to His people—unity that overcomes barriers of language, place, and even time.
Remember that unity as you go about your life this week, remember the power of that unity to bring God’s people together in community, and remember the impact of a word to a foreigner in their home language.
