What an extraordinary life for Job. Perhaps the most extraordinary feature of his life was his faith. Even though there were times of bitter complaint to God, he never really wavered from his belief in God. He never gave up on the Lord. Despite suffering and pain he continued to honour the Lord. He continued to trust in the Lord – whatever happened in his life.
He was a man who had everything, then he had next to nothing, and then it was all restored to more than he had before. Through all of it his faith remained.
To such faith we can respond with the Psalm from today – written by another man of faith who most certainly had his share of ups and downs: David.
Psalm 34 is like a commentary on the ups and downs of life where David urges people to keep their eyes on the Lord. He assures them that even if they “suffer a lot, the Lord will bring them safely through” (vs 19)’
That’s how it was for Job, though the ups and downs of his life, he too could praise the Lord.
