In this world, there are people whose focus is on strength, power, authority and control. For some it is about knowledge that empowers them and gives them control and authority over others. For others it’s political influence. For others it’s financial. It’s sin at work. Of course, motives can vary: for the good of others, or for the good of self. On the other hand, there are people – many, many people, who suffer the consequences of the decisions made by the rich and powerful. They too can be tempted to gain their own power and ways of controlling their own lives and the lives of others. It’s a vicious cycle.
In Jesus, God offers a new way, blessings based not on human power and authority, but on humility and a desire to serve and bless others. In his humility he serves us with forgiveness. Mercy and peace are his gift to forgiven sinners.
In the beatitudes, verses 7 & 9 point to great blessing for those whose hearts are focussed on lost and broken people. The blessings of mercy and peace are theirs as a blessing from the Lord.
