It’s probably reasonable to suggest that most of us are not usually fully aware of just how close we have been to very dangerous situations. Perhaps it’s like the quip of an elderly driver saying: “I’ve never had an accident in my life – but I’ve seen a few in my rear vision mirror”. Sometimes it’s hindsight that tells how close we have been to danger – to stormy weather. But sometimes it’s right there in front of us – unavoidable – inevitable. Can you call to mind right now one of those dangerous moments of your life?
What were you thinking? How did it feel? What did it do to you? Helplessness? Fear? Giving up? All these sorts of things can happen in that sort of situation. The Word today is a message from our rescuer, Jesus. It’s a Word of assurance: “I am listening. I know what’s happening to you. I have come to save you.”
Jesus is called Saviour for no other reason other than this: This he claims, and this is what he is doing: “I came to seek and to save the lost.” So as we rest in these words this Sunday, invite the Lord to bless you once again with the assurance of his salvation – maybe even to save you once for all!
Lord, as we navigate the storms of life, keep our eyes fixed on you; keep our hearts and minds linked with yours. Assure us of your loving mercy at work in our lives. We ask this in His name.
