It takes faith. I recently watched a YouTube clip of a person backing toward a bungee jump – till finally – over the edge. Now you or I might not be into bungy jumping – or skydiving for that matter. Why would we leave a perfectly good platform or flying plane to leap into the unknown. It takes faith. And then we meet Bartimaeus. He had faith that the Lord could heal him – and heal him Jesus did. Jesus commended him for his faith.
You or I may not be regular bungee jumpers or skydivers. Some of us certainly are afflicted with illness or disability; but it takes that same faith to live every day.
Faith is the stuff that gets us out of bed. Faith is the stuff that enables us to trust in what we cannot see. Faith makes us sure of what we hope for (Hebrews 11:1). Faith enables us to send our kids to school on their bikes, walk onto a plane, lay down on an operating table, greet a person we may never have met before, open our door to a stranger. We live by faith. There really is no other way.
What is this faith? It’s putting our hope and trust in the Lord in every circumstance of our lives.
There’s a bit of Bartimaeus in all of us. We want to see and understand clearly. There’s a bungee jumper in all of us; we trust the Lord will keep us from crashing out into the rocks. There’s some of the skydiver in all of us- trusting let the Lord will parachute us to a safe landing.
Yes, life, real life, takes faith, real faith, in our Lord and Saviour Jesus.
