As the end of the church year closes in on us – only two weeks away till advent begins the new church year – we naturally start to think about end things.
The reading from the prophet Malachi reminds us that the last great day of judgement is on the way: “The day of judgement will be certain to come!” Malachi 4:1. It’s not a pretty end for proud and sinful people. However, for people of faith, victory will shine like the sun! (Malachi 4:2) The reading from 2 Thessalonians warns us against falling into lazy patterns. The apostle Paul ends this section saying “dear friends, you must never become tired of doing right”. 2 Thessalonians 3 :13 Luke tells us the story of the temptation to look at our work as if it is something of lasting significance. ‘The beautiful stones that built the temple, and the gifts that filled the temple: will not last’ Jesus says. The chapter goes on to warn God’s people that life will get difficult for people of faith as the end times get closer. But then comes this assurances: “You will be saved by being faithful to me” (Luke 21:19) All together this can seem pretty scary stuff. That’s the old. No matter how hard we try to build ourselves secure lives we’re reminded that nothing is permanent. What will really count at the end is simply faith!
That’s the new, and this is the good news. Things can get really bad, but never-the-less, we don’t worry. As baptised people, we look to Jesus. We have faith in him. Our eternal life is secure.
