Can you imagine a couple of elderly people who spent their lives hoping and praying for something – deep in their hearts. Finally, that day arrives. Imagine the joy, the relief, the happiness, the release they experience.
That’s how it was for Simeon and Anna. Each in their own lives had hoped and prayed to see the Messiah. Finally, he came to them, still a baby in his mother’s arms. The Spirit of God told Simeon to go to the Temple. When he arrived, Jesus was placed into his arms. Simeon raised him high and expressed his joy in prayer and praise to the Lord. Anna, was there too. She was an elderly widow had served for decades as a prophet in the temple. She went about telling people about Jesus!
The church has used Simeon’s prayer for centuries after we have held the body and blood of Christ in our hands in Holy Communion.
Lord., Now let your servant depart in peace according to your word. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all people.
A light that reveals you to the nations and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
It’s also a prayer used at the end of the funeral service for a person of faith. I hope my family will include and sing this prayer for me at my funeral – and perhaps yours too?
