All of today’s Bible readings are about receiving and living in God’s grace. Deuteronomy 30 give us the choice between life and death, blessing and curse.
Psalm 1 contrasts the person who sinks their roots into the deep waters of God’s Word with the wicked person who follows the superficial pursuits of their own hearts, which are life chaff that is blown away.
And St Paul puts a major decision in the hands of Philemon as he sends back to him his run-away slave Onesimus, the ‘useless one’ who had been usefully assisting Paul while he was in prison. And finally, the Gospel confronts us with this challenge between our loyalty to our family and loyalty to Jesus. Jesus says that this is a monumental decision, a cosmic calculation, and the biggest decision we will ever make. It is a decision as big as a king deciding whether he goes to war, or an architect deciding whether to build a large public tower.
Out of his love, God has decided to be totally there for you, forever.
Will you allow God’s decision for you be the centre of your life, for the rest of your life?
