It’s quite a thing to see holiness and obedience merge like this in Jesus, and then overflow into our lives. It took the obedience of Jesus, who allowed himself be the sacrificial lamb for our sins and the sins of the whole world, to ultimately make us right with God. That means Jesus’ obedience paved the way for our holiness in the presence of God. Jesus did not have to obey his Father. He could simply have refused in an act of disobedience. Instead however, his love overrode the temptation to disobey And he willingly gave his life for us. This was and remains a real expression of love, God’s love; still at work in our lives.
We may be tempted to think that it is our obedience to God it makes us holy and right with him. But no, our holiness can only be so because of Jesus obedience to God the Father on our behalf. The question then becomes: how does our obedience and holiness overflow as real love into the lives of other people?
It begins with obedience to the Lord when he tells us loud and clear: “Love one another as I have loved you”. When we love other people like that, we are sharing with them an act of holy living. Obedience then may overflow in Holiness. If the people we love that way receive our love as God’s love, and that love changes their lives. Right then and there, God’s holiness is overflowing into their lives.
