Our Gospel today is not just asking WHAT are you feeding, but FROM WHOM are you getting your food? Are you sitting at the feet of Jesus?
This Jesus is not condemning all of the good things in life including loving and generous acts of hospitality. In fact the New Testament commends us to be hospitable. In Jesus, ALL things hold together. Jesus is saying that he is the key to everything, and each part of our everyday lives is connected to him. And when we relate everything to him, the importance of everything falls into perspective. If we take Jesus out of the centre of our lives, our whole life becomes a search from one skewed focus to another. If we are not seeing them through the eyes of Jesus and doing them in the strength that Jesus gives us, they can become poisonous for ourselves and those around us.
When we sit at the feet of Jesus, we begin to see that he has skin just like we do, ten toes, ankles and knees. We especially see the nail marks in his feet which remind us of his utter love and compassion for us. And we hear that compassion in his gentle response to Martha: “Martha, Martha”. He gently says your name, and my name, and calls us to himself again and again.
His love calls us into our first and ultimate relationship with him. Around Jesus everything else fall into its place of importance and priority.
