Have you ever observed people making judgements and holding grudges against each other – to the point of separation? They may be people whom you thought were friends, or at very least shared in faith or community. Such action divides. It criticizes. It judges. It destroys relationships and holds others to ransom: my way or the highway! That is the way of the world. On the other hand, have you observed people with opposite opinions graciously allowing each other their opinion; forgiving their differences; and perhaps even working together for the good of everyone?
It’s true isn’t it, that we don’t always get it right. I’m not always right. Sometimes people of faith hold contrary positions. Sometimes our faith in the Lord’s grace isn’t extended to others. Paul observes this behaviour among those first Christians. It’s what prompts him to write Welcome all the Lord’s followers, even those whose faith is weak. Don’t criticize them for having beliefs that are different from yours.
God’s grace makes it possible for us to live like this. He forgives and sets us free for life and loving service. Every time you hear the words of forgiveness spoken over you – at worship or wherever you are – you are experiencing the mercy of God.
How far has the LORD taken our sins from us? Farther than the distance from east to west! Just as parents are kind to their children, the LORD is kind to all who worship him. Psalm 130:12,13 Some actions this word encourages: Forgiveness. Acceptance. Serving. Speaking well of each other. Try to understand opinions other than your own.
All these things bring life and freedom.
