I have a friend named Tony who contracted a disabling disease as a young man. He lost his ability to walk unaided. With great perseverance, lots of prayer, and faith, he was once again able to walk – but only by using 2 sticks. His nickname is obvious: 2-Sticks.
It was amazing to consider all the things that 2-Stick was able to achieve in his life. Perhaps one of the greatest was his ability to fly! Yes, fly. Tony became an expert glider pilot.
The reason I tell this story is to give witness to the strength the Lord is able to give to people when they are down and out. We all go through seasons in our lives we feel less than ‘soaring’ up there with the eagles. It could be illness or loss of any kind. It could be a season of depression and loss of initiative. It could be guilt over sin that causes us to give up and withdraw – never to fly again. All sorts of things can clip our wings and bring us down to earth with a thud. The nation of Israel had turned away from the Lord. They became like a wounded eagle – brought down and laid low. God sent his prophet Isaiah to encourage them to look up and out: to look up to him, trust in him; and look out confidently to a new future in the company of the Lord.
