God and Jesus affirm the importance of our natural family, but as followers of Jesus, he calls us to recognise Jesus and his body as the family of primacy.
Our natural families have short term connections and authority and familial love, which is not as deep as the unconditional love of the eternal community of Jesus, which binds us through every season of our life and every crisis that we face including the final crisis of death.
In fact, what Jesus really wants is complete shalom or deep peace within our natural families as well as the deep and lasting peace forever in the family of God.Jesus is not, however, prepared to turn a blind eye, or paper over the brokenness between people in families.
He wants us to be fully clean and reconciled by means of the eternal love of God. God’s love AND the love of a family are what Jesus wants for every one of us, but he wants for us more than just the tenuous and temperamental love of just a family.
Jesus wants us to have the full, deep and genuine peace that only he can give us.
