In the readings set out for this week James and Mark remind us that it’s not so much what we consume but rather what emanates from us that marks us as Christians as we seek to bring God’s love to a truly broken world. That can seem like a call to arms, to ceaseless work with is so much broken in the world right now.
Sometimes the brokenness of the world threatens to overwhelm – there are so many needs and just one me! If we think we have to do it all on our own, we can become discouraged.
Thankfully we do not have to rely on our own abilities and strength. When we work together with God, in prayer and in action, we have the whole company of heaven with us. We also have our Christian brothers and sisters working alongside us, even as we work on different things – truly co-labourers. What a wonderful image – none of us need walk or work alone if we have faith in the one who brought the good news, Jesus.
This week may our mustard seeds (or our saplings or solid trees) of faith work in us to nourish our bodies and souls and through us as we walk and work together serving each other and those we encounter.
May God’s peace be with us all.
