There is a well-known saying: ‘In the midst of life we are in death’.
Martin Luther even expanded a prayer into a hymn with the same name. This phrase, reportedly originally from the Latin, can be interpreted to mean that death is part of life or that every day we are alive, we are ever closer to death. Our sermon for this week essentially turns that saying on its head – though death may be ‘in the room’ in this story – and in our lives – so is life eternal, through Jesus.
