Today is called Advent Sunday, the beginning of a new year in the church’s cycle of worship. Advent means: He is coming. The Lord Christ is coming, but which coming are we talking about? Certainly, we are getting ready for Christmas, the celebration of his first coming.
But in the days of Advent we are also looking beyond Christmas, beyond the story of his earthly life, beyond the reality of his unseen presence with us – we are looking beyond all these things to his final Advent.
The scripture readings today urge us to get ready for Christ’s final coming on the Last Day, when he will appear in glory, human history as we know it will come to an end, and we will all stand before him. Be ready for the coming of the Lord!
