“The gift that keeps on giving”.
You can trace the first commercial use of the phrase “the gift that keeps on giving” to as early as the 1920’s and Victor Radio. The phrase has been used to advertise many things over the years. This slogan has been used to sell jewellery, gift cards, and even Godiva chocolates.
But if you really want a gift that truly keeps on giving – like the never emptying packet of “Tim-Tams”, then look no further than your Baptism.
You and I can visit this gift every day. We can relive the gift with a simple restating the Words of Baptism as we apply a wet sign of the cross to our forehead – every morning.
We relive our baptism every day as we seek Jesus’ mercy – a word of forgiveness – grace in any situation of hurt, of brokenness or sin.
Geoff Bullock wrote a song “O The Mercy of God”. Here’s the first verse . . .
Oh the mercy of God // The glory of grace
That You choose to redeem us // To forgive and restore
And You call us Your children // Chosen in Him
To be holy and blameless // To the glory of God
This is the gift of Baptism, chosen, forgiven, living under and by the mercy and grace of God – Everyday!
