Wisdom is one of God’s many gifts to the world. It’s not exclusive to any group of people. Christians don’t have any claim on it, but we do know the source of wisdom. The Lord spells it out very clearly:
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
This is true even in secular society. There needs to be a recognized and shared ground zero for wisdom. We can already see the way societies are fragmenting in the absence of such a shared understanding of the source of wisdom. Even though God has graciously sown his word into the hearts of all people, there are so many different voices and sources claiming wisdom, that it is sometimes hard to hear the voice of the Lord.
Thank the Lord that you are people he has called; who have heard his voice. You know Jesus, and Jesus is the revealed wisdom of God: but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:24 ESV)
So if we desire to be wise people, our lives will find their reason and direction in Jesus as we acknowledge him with reverence and honour.
You might consider reading this Sunday’s Bible texts ahead of worship.
• The reading from Proverbs 31:10-31 tells us of a wise person–a capable wife.
• Psalm 1 reminds us of the blessings of being rooted deeply in the Word of the Lord.
• James 3 :13 – 4: 3, 7, 8a spells out for us what wise living looks like.
The Gospel puts to rest our vain human ideas and points us back to Jesus.
